“TIME TRAVEL” by Karen A Roth
Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, (House of Figs) at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me.
And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” ~MATTHEW 21:1-3
Almost 2000 years ago in 30 AD Jesus chose to ride into the city of Jerusalem on the colt of a donkey. He gives explicit directions to His disciples where to find the donkeys and what to say if confronted. The title ‘LORD’ is synonymous with God. They all new that God wanted the donkey. Jerusalem became a hub of excitement and tension in the days leading to the Passover.
Why a donkey? Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah:“All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet Zechariah, saying: “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ “ MT 21:4-5; ZC 9:9
Jesus completes the pattern found in the Bible. Abraham’s son Isaac rode on a donkey to be offered as a sacrifice. Abraham even placed the wood for the sacrifice on his son’s shoulders, another pattern that will unfold this week in history with Jesus carrying the wood for his own sacrifice on his shoulders. Isaac asked, “Where’s the lamb for the sacrifice?” Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide a lamb.” (GN 22:8) God stopped Abraham from offering his son.
= THE 10TH OF NISAN
So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. ~MT 21:6-8
The road into Jerusalem is packed with a great multitude of travelers. They see Jesus riding a donkey—the sign of a king. The disciples add to the pageantry by throwing their garments on the donkey. The Israelites began spreading garments on the road in front of Jesus.
Historians say that many draped cloths on large rocks, trees, and the sides of buildings for a grand display. They waved palm branches or laid them on the road before Jesus to demonstrate their joy.
It’s the 10th of Nisan—the day male lambs are chosen for the Passover sacrifice in Israel, but the Christian world will rename it Palm Sunday. According to Hebrew law, each family chose a lamb for their Passover sacrifice. The lamb must be made visible for five days before the Passover, so everyone can observe the lamb’s perfection.
= HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST!
Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!” And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.” ~MT 21:9-11
Although it’s not the Feast of Tabernacles, it’s very significant that the Jews cut down branches of trees to wave in their hands and lay on the road before Jesus to show their joy. They shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”—praising, blessing, wishing prosperity, happiness, and safety.
Hosanna means ‘Save I beseech.’ But it’s the Feast of Tabernacles that the Israelites calledforth ‘Hosanna.’ The seventh day of the feast is called ‘the Great Hosanna.’ Amazing that they chose to glorify the Son of David with Hosannas when it’s never ever been part of the celebration for Passover! Today they make a grand display of what they sense is happening.
Jesus is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Joshua—meaning: ‘God is Salvation.’ Nazareth means BRANCH. Galilee means the country of Gentiles. If we translate the Greek words, it means: God is salvation—even to the branch of Gentiles. Gentiles were included in God’s salvation!
= OVERTURNED THE TABLES
Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.” Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. ~MT 21:12-14
Three years earlier, after His initial cleansing/baptism/anointing in the Jordan River by John the Baptist at the start of His ministry, Jesus cleansed the Temple. Cleansing His Father’s House seems to be the public act marking the beginning and close of His ministry.
Jesus once again cleansed the profanity in His Father’s House saying, “My house shall be called a house of prayer.” He sanctifies the Temple for those hungering for the supernatural power of God. Someone greater is in the House!
It’s unlawful for the blind and lame to come into the Temple. But Jesus overturned and drove out what didn’t belong—making room for the blind and lame to come to Him and be miraculously healed.
= PERFECTED PRAISE
But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read, “Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise?” ~MATTHEW 21:1-16
Some scholars consider overturning tables to be similar to Isaiah rolling up the scroll of heaven. Its prophetic language interpreting the heavenly luminaries as representing kings, empires, and states. In 30 AD Jesus turned the world upside down.
The joy is glorious! Even children cry out “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
The chief priests and scribes refused to see the miraculous power of God. They question Jesus, “Do You hear what these children are saying?” The answer Jesus gave infuriated them even more. One translation cites, “toddlers shout the songs that drown out enemy talk, and silence atheist babble.”
= THE LAMB OF GOD
John the Baptist “saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” ~JOHN 1:29
Jesus came into Jerusalem like all the lambs to be chosen for the Passover sacrifice. The lamb must be visible at the Temple for five days so everyone can see its perfection. The scripture is very clear on what Jesus did each day…where He slept…who He talked to … what He spoke about.
Everything Jesus did is documented. If we want to enter into God’s pattern or participate in a divine moment, it’s helpful to know the exact date. Patterns are repeated throughout history. It’slike a tapestry—there’s a pattern that emerges from the stitches.
God’s stitched His Tapestry of the ages with unique patterns. Each stitch represents a pattern of numbers, years, colors, thread choices, etc. If we discover the pattern—were able to locate what happens and/or where it will appear next.
= TIME TRAVEL
Historically… we know what happened on Resurrection Sunday almost 2000 years ago. If we enter into worship—loving the Lord with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength—we likewise may enter a similar moment in the Spirit.
Who knows if we find a time-warp or open-door into the supernatural? We may step back into history to the day they chose the lamb for the Passover sacrifice. Or, we may see father Abraham lead Isaac to the sacrifice? Who knows if we go back to the garden of Eden and see God choose the first lamb to sacrifice and cover the sin of Adam and Eve?
Our visions and dreams are a form of time travel. Lord God, please help us discover the divine pattern, so we too can enter into the divine moment of time travel—“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
