THE MARRIAGE SUPPER of the LAMB by Dickey Porter
“And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. (2) And both Jesus was called and his disciples, to the marriage. (3) And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. (4) Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come. (5) His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. (6) And there were set six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. (7) Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. (8) And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. (9) When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew), the governor of the feast called the bridegroom (10) And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse; but thou hast kept the good wine until now. (11) This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.” John 2:1-11
St John’s perspective from what he experienced in his gospel (above) and what he saw and heard in the Revelation below, chapter 19:6-9.
“And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God ominpotent reigneth. (7) Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. (8) And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white; for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. (9) And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”
What I am going to write about this subject and especially what John experienced in the first miracle of Jesus is going to be from the spiritual side of this story and not from the natural side. I believe that there was really a marriage in Cana in Galilee and everything took place just as John recorded it, but there is more to this story that just a retelling of the first miracle of Jesus. First the natural, then the spiritual.
When I look at Scripture, I always look at it from the perspective of the Tabernacle of Moses and the pattern that it shows forth. It is the grandfather clause of all New Testament truth and a thorough understanding of its dimensions are necessary to “see” where I am coming from and where I am going.
This story starts off by saying, “And the third day”. So, I immediately say, where is the 3rd day or dimension of the Tabernacle of Moses? First there is the outer court, then the sanctuary, and finally, the Holy of Holies. So, we find ourselves behind the veil (of our flesh) and in the glory of God’s presence.
“And the mother of Jesus was there”. This is not talking about Mary, but Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the Mother of us all. Gal 4:26.
Jesus and his disciples, as well as we, were/are called unto this feast, or celebration of marriage. And everyone wanted wine, but they were out of wine. There is a hunger in the heart and soul of every man or woman that only God can fill. We know what that hunger is, but the lost sheep of the world do not know and they try to fill the void in their lives by using drugs, alcohol, sex or crime to try to satisfy that hunger.
Mary said unto Jesus, they have no wine. Then Jesus said to Mary, ‘Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.” Jesus never did address Mary as Mother. Even when he made the 5th utterance on the cross, he called her Woman. “Woman, behold thy son. (Then looking at John). Son behold thy Mother.”
Now I know from the natural, what Jesus said to Mary was it is not time for me to do what you are asking. But since it is first the natural, then the spiritual, what he was doing in type (by turning the water into wine) was saying to her, “I can’t baptize with the Holy Ghost until after I am glorified. Death on the cross, burial, resurrection, ascension, and finally coming again on the day of Pentecost. Water and wine have always been a type of Spirit in Scripture. Water in our salvation experience and wine in the baptism of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost baptizes us into the body of Christ. Jesus baptizes us in the Holy Ghost per John in the wilderness. I indeed baptize you in water for the repentance of sin, but He (Jesus) will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire.
There were six waterpots of stone containing two or three firkins apiece. A firkin is about nine gallons, so we are looking at 108 to 162 gallons of wine that Jesus changed from water that was filled to the brim. I see this as a type of our salvation, (water to the brim) and the baptism in the Holy Ghost as the pouring out of ministry to others. If we are led by the Spirit of God, we are the sons of God.
The governor of the feast called the bridegroom and exclaimed that he had saved the good wine until last. Wine, a type of the Holy Ghost. I have said it before and I will say itagain, the Holy Ghost is the God of the world to come. God saved the best for last. Not for the end of the world or the end of the age, but he poured it out at the beginning on the day of Pentecost. This is what John experienced by his writings in the gospel of John.
Now for what John saw and heard in the Revelation while exiled on the Isle of Patmos (place of my killing).
John heard the voice of multitudes, many waters, and mighty thunderings (3rd dimension) which is no doubt all the heavenly hosts crying.
“The marriage of the Lamb is come” Notice the tense of this proclamation. “is come”. Not “is yet to come”. Not “came”, but “is come”, which is present tense. Now! A prognosticator is someone who won’t take “now” for an answer.
So many people are waiting for a 7 year supper with the Lord someday in the sweet by and by, but this Scripture tells us that the marriage of the Lamb “is come” right now. We are already married to Christ. If we aren’t, then everything that we have ever done in his name is bastard.
“And his wife has made herself ready.” We did this by accepting what God, through the death, burial, and resurrection of his son, has already done. The linen, clean and white that we are wearing as saints, is the righteousness of Jesus and what his precious blood has done for us.
And we are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb and we are blessed.
