“GOD’S SHOFAR HAS SOUNDED!’” by Karen A Roth
On July 4th Americans celebrate an unbelievable miracle—similar to God’s intervention portrayed in Israel’s biblical history. But one of the most important reasons for celebration: “The United States of America is the only country, ever, (including ancient and modern-day Israel), to be founded on an ‘IDEA’—not an ethnicity,” wrote William J. Ostan. “The American Experiment was unique and improbable in 1776, when Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence and the American colonies defied Britain, the most powerful nation on earth at the time.”
Many gatherings or congresses convened in the Colonies to establish foundational principles for government of a new nation. The war that ensued formed a ‘Nation under God’ that would perpetuate their commonly held vision for America for future generations.
The Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, the Federalist Papers etc. are early writings that maintained their significance for well over two hundred years. The founding fathers declared:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The Founding Fathers sought to preserve the furtherance of these truths and considered these beliefs imperative for maintaining freedom today.
GOD’S HAND OF PROTECTION
George Washington led the American troops in the battle for freedom. Washington’s tall stature attracted attention. Earlier, in the French and Indian War an Indian chief singled Washington out for death and ordered all his warriors to shoot him. Washington had two horses killed under him, and four bullets passed through his coat in one battle—yet he was not touched!
According to the writings of Edward E. Ellis, records reveal that years later the chief had claimed that he had fired a dozen shots at Washington before becoming convinced the Great Spirit protected him. It was miraculous! God seems to have hedged George Washington in on all sides and protected him. Washington was never wounded in any battle!
By the hand of God, the American Army captured Fort Ticonderoga (May 10, 1775) without a single gunshot! Colonel Ethan Allen awakened British Captain Delaplace of Ticonderoga in the middle of the night and ordered his surrender. The astounded captain replied, “By whose authority do you make the demand?” Allen knew that it was the day appointed for the convening of Congress in Philadelphia—so his resounding War-Cry: “In the Name of Jehovah and the Continental Congress!”
Delaplace surrendered the Fort. To God be the Glory!
PROVIDENCE OF GOD
In his journals, George Washington often gave praise to the ‘finger of Providence.’
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance.” Ps 33:12
“Our founding fathers and mothers were very learned, highly literate leaders who understood what providence meant and accurately used it to describe the active interventions that the God of the Bible made on behalf of our emerging nation.” According to Ostan, “They knew then, as we do now with 20-20 historical hindsight, that the God of Providence was ‘providing’ a way for the United States of America to be born. The Lord was literally our ‘provision.’”
God found a people with a heart after Him… who loved His Word desired to be under His care. Therefore, God guided a colony to become a nation under Him—as our Pledge of Allegiance testifies: “…One Nation Under God.”
TESTIMONY OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE
During a blinding snowstorm on Christmas night 1776, George Washington, the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army led troops across the Delaware River. It was a difficult crossing for them to maneuver and unfamiliar terrain to travel in the dark of night. The next morning the army overwhelmed the enemy in a surprise attack on Trenton.
It could have been disastrous for the Continental Army without Divine Providence. The evening before the battle, the British army commander in Trenton was playing a card game when a messenger came with a letter for him. He tucked it into his pocket to read after the game but forgot all about it. Had he opened the letter, he would have been aware that Americans were marching toward Trenton.
The battle cost the Americans two lives. It became the most notable conflict of the Revolution. Many consider it the turning point of the war. The attack was sudden and clever. The results were so spectacular and unexpected that America was thrilled with renewed hope. Enlistments quickly increased and everywhere there was a stronger resolve to win the cherished independence.
THE FORGING OF A NATION (December 1777—June 1778)
The battle for freedom wasn’t easy… Valley Forge was a Wilderness for the soldiers of the Continentals. In its womb, a starving and destitute group of soldiers were trained, disciplined, and reorganized. The men were without adequate shelter, food or clothing and lived in crude huts built by their own hands… but they looked to God pressed towards the goal.
Many died of starvation or cold, and at no time were more than half of them fit for active service. The winter at Valley Forge was one of the darkest of the American Revolution, but the suffering and hardship forged a mighty Army of warriors by Spring.
What began in Concord in the Spring of 1775, birthed a nation seven years later when the Continentals had a triumphant victory at Yorktown to seal their independence.
GOD’S SHOFAR HAS SOUNDED: ‘GET-READY!’
The Congress assembled the day after the victory at Yorktown and together—visited a local church to “return thanks to Almighty God for crowning the Allied Armies of the United States and France with victory.” The treaty was signed in France in the fall of 1783.
The Spirit of God hovered over the inception of this Nation in many other miraculous occurrences. Independence came at a tremendous cost of life, “yet men did not love their lives to the death.” They each courageously regarded their personal loss not to be compared to the establishing the government of a new Nation under God. The founding generation gave their lives and fortunes to ensure America’s future government would provide godly liberty for all.
America’s watchmen shifted from the founding documents of freedom—but the SHOFAR SOUNDED a message for Spiritual Warriors to ‘stand by’ saying—‘Get Ready!’
