“WHAT WE DO WHEN WE GO THROUGH THINGS, IS WHAT MATTERS” by Zirkie Smit
In July it was 25 years ago, that I gave my life to Jesus, and by grace, I have never wanted to turn back to anything of my past life. That day was marked in time for me to step into the reason God sent me to the earth. As the congregation sang “There’s a sweet anointing flowing into this place…”, the Holy Spirit started ministering to me and I stepped into that peaceful water, to be forever changed.
I am not one that has great Revelation knowledge to share or the ability to break open the word to bring deep, deep understanding, but what I know is that I have known Him from the beginning.
I know that I can always trust Him even if I don’t know what is going on, why it is happening or why I fail to understand the meaning of certain things.
I have come to know that there is a place of “knowing” inside of me that knows all things. I have come to call this my “knower”
Once God has spoken something into my knower, I know things beyond my intellect, beyond my years, beyond my personal belief system and beyond anything man can ever say to me.
God Himself told me that He loves me and that, thát love is ALL the love I could ever need, so that when I feel totally unloved, I can remind myself of that ONE TRUE love that will sustain me throughout my walk here on earth.
The same way my knower knows about God loving me, it also knows that I can ALWAYS trust Him.
I can trust Him without knowing the outcome, I can trust Him even if I can’t see, I can trust Him even if I can’t hear or feel. I can trust Him, even as the pain is like a burning fire ready to consume.
In this journey called life I have come to realize the value or even better than that, the pure necessity of speaking to my inner man. King David says in Ps 46:5
Why are you cast down, O my inner self? And why should you moan over me and be disquieted within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall yet praise Him, my Help, and my God.
This verse always reminds me that it is my own responsibility to go and speak to my inner man, when it is feeling lost, hopeless, sad, or overwhelmed. Nobody is going to do that on my behalf, this is something I need to do.
It is okay to recognize that there come times where you are not okay, but then the responsibility falls to you to do something about it. This is where you turn the lamp inwards to see a few things:
- What thoughts you are busy with?
- Do these thoughts build up or break down?
- Which people do you allow to speak to you or be around you?
- Whose company do you seek when things get tough?
- From whom or where do you receive advice?
- Who do you turn to when there is nowhere to go?
- What do you do when there is nothing else to do?
- Are you willing to receive a word of correction?
- Will you heed to that correction?
- What is the atmosphere you bring to any room?
- What does your self-talk sound like?
Once you decided to have regular “meetings” with yourself, you will realize that there are things that you need to have in place that can help you through times where you feel you have no words or where you feel the waves are crushing over you. King David knew that as he speaks of deep crying unto deep in Ps 42:7
[Roaring] deep calls to [roaring] deep at the thunder of Your waterspouts; all Your breakers and Your rolling waves have gone over me. Yet the Lord will command His loving-kindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me, a prayer to the God of my life.
Psalm 42:7-8 AMPC
As you become trained in recognizing when your inner man needs a talking to, you will also set things in place. Ensure that you are under Spiritual authority, as you have to be accountable to someone that guards over your soul.
Obey your spiritual leaders and recognize their authority, for they keep watch over your soul without resting since they will have to give an account to God for their work. So, it will benefit you when you make their work a pleasure and not a heavy burden.
Hebrews 13:17 TPT
Listen to what you say to yourself and when that self-talk turns sad or hopeless or harsh, you know you need to reach out to gain understanding. For me this is where the scripture comes alive that says the Kingdom of God is at hand. It possibly means so much more that what I am saying here, but for me being at hand means I can reach out a hand to touch earth from heaven or I can also reach out a hand from where I am, so that heaven can touch me. It is only a reach far. I can give Godly council and I can receive Godly council.
It matters what we do on the inside, when we go through difficult times, because it will manifest outwardly. If something difficult comes our way, we can learn from Moses in Exo 20:21
And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
Where is the word while you go through stuff?
This commandment that I’m commanding you today isn’t too much for you, it’s not out of your reach. It’s not on a high mountain—you don’t have to get mountaineers to climb the peak and bring it down to your level and explain it before you can live it. And it’s not across the ocean—you don’t have to send sailors out to get it, bring it back, and then explain it before you can live it. No. The word is right here and now—as near as the tongue in your mouth, as near as the heart in your chest. Just do it!
Deuteronomy 30:11-14 MSG
We all make mistakes, get up, shake the dust off and go on. God is FOR you, He is WITH you, He lives IN you and He works THROUGH you.
Another thing that can really change how you go through things is how you frame your story when you re-tell it. Framing your words differently can change your memory of that bad thing that happened. As you tell your story, highlight the testimony of God’s greatness more than the sad, hurt or anger that the story possibly had. The world we live in was framed by the word of God, so frame your world by the words of life you use to tell your story.
As you walk your story out,
- Know when to take time out
- Remind yourself who you are
- Show up when it matters – the real you – the one sent forth to be the difference
When THAT one shows up, people will see and know “there you are!”
The more time you spend knowing God and what His word and His will for your life is, the more your thoughts will be conformed to His thoughts, and you will start thinking as He thinks. He did set eternity in our hearts, so there are things that our “knowers” will know and remember from when we were still with Him.
So, guard your heart carefully, because God’s words live there, and they will carry you through times that are tough for you. Those words will encourage and uplift you and be enough for you when life gets tough.
Take heart, there are a lot of stuff we don’t know, but what we DO know, is that God loves us and always will. We belong to Him, and He belongs to us. This is the things we remind ourselves of and when the night feels like it will never end, reach out a hand to help someone else in their need, and that outreach will be met by the touch of God.
He will touch you; He will change you, fill you up to overflowing, step in and be set free today…
